Abstract: 

This study surveyed the accuracy of citations in authored articles published in the 1387 issues of Library and Information Science Quarterly Journal. The statistical populations of this study consisted of 585 books and journals citations articles published in 4 issues in 1387. By using random sampling method 230 citations were selected. The findings showed that: in 51.8 percent of English journals citations, 39 percent of Persian journals citations, 28.5 percent of English books citations and 48 percent of Persian books citations have errors and 21.4 percent of this error rates are major citations errors. There is not a significant relationship between error rate and type of document and there is not a significant relationship between error rates and language of citations. The results showed that sharing of responsibility between authors, editors, and reviewers and a assessment of a certain percentage of a submitted article’s references as part of the acceptance process can be potential solutions to the problem of citations inaccuracy.

Abstract: 

Objective: One of the main aspects of scientific journals is their scientific output, i. e. their published papers. The scientific output of a journal should be evaluated from a scientometric perspective regularly for its development in the field, determining highly-productive and more influential authors, co-authorship patterns, co-word occurrences, keyword clusters and so on. This study aimed at evaluating the research performance and visualizing the scientific maps of the Library and Information Science Quarterly in the 10-year time span of 2009-2018. Methodology: This study is an applied scientometric analysis. All 370 published papers of the journal published in its 40 issues and indexed in the Islamic Science Citation Index (ISC) in the time span of 2009-2018 were extracted and needed data were modified by a predetermined protocol and the output was mapped and analyzed in different appropriate software packages (NetDraw for mapping co-authorship patterns, VOSviewr for visualizing keyword cooccurrences and Ucinet for determining the authors' centrality rankings). Findings: The geographical distribution of authoring institutes showed that authoring institutions were from different universities in Iran with Ferdowsi University of Mashhad in the first rank. The highly-productive and most influential authors' status regarding their published papers, received citations and h-indices were appropriate in the journal, as they were affiliated to some main research institutes and universities active in the field of Library and Information Science in Iran. The co-authorship pattern was mainly two-authored collaboration. Collaborating authors' degree, betweenness and closeness centrality rankings showed their effective relationship and interaction with each other in the field. The keyword co-occurrence map showed the journal's attention to the topics in Library and Information studies, including among others university libraries and their users. The mapped subject clusters showed 8 subject clusters and demonstrated that the journal prioritized scientometrics and Science policy-making and knowledge organization as well as the Library management. Conclusion: This journal has found its way in the field of Library and Information Science. The subjects that were considered in the journal accord with those of the World. As receiving more citations is a main indicator for conceiving a journal as an influential journal in its field, in spite of ever-increasing influence of this journal on the Library and Information field, the total ratio of citations per paper should be increased by making the journal more available and the share of newly-emerged topics need to be increased in authoring for it. These can be helpful in making the journal more prolific and influential in Iran's Library and Information field more than ever.

Abstract: 

To develop a product there are two main approaches: Direct Engineering, or Reverse Engineering. In direct engineering, the aim is to manufacture a product that is felt needed, for which there are no prior design plan. All production processes must be started from scratch. In reverse engineering, however, the aim is to manufacture a new product using a product that has already been manufactured. The initial product is used as a template to save on investment and time. Since it eliminates many difficult, costly and time consuming production processes, reverse engineering has come to be acknowledged as an appropriate method for product manufacturing. Based on the teachings of allegorical thinking, using tried methods within a field of Science to solve problems in other fields, is a common and reasonable approach leading to economy and increased productivity. In Library and Information Science we are confronted with large body of issues that could be possibly solved in a novel and appropriate manner with the help of well-tried approaches such as reverse engineering. The present paper while introducing and outlining reverse engineering, would indicate some of the examples and applications in Library and Information Science activities. Application of reverse engineering in Information organization, reference services, computer software, databases and Information seeking behavior.

Abstract: 

Purpose: When some Information is missed or unintentional mistakes are happened in a published paper, the authors or the editors would write an erratum to correct and make the Information reliable. The current research investigates corrections to the papers published in Library & in Information Science (LIS) journals during 2006-2015. Methodology: The current study was an applied research conducted through a descriptive and correlational survey method using scientometric indicators. The sample of the study comprised of 212 erratums published in 47 Web of Science-indexed LIS journals. Results: Findings of the study revealed that during the time span of this research, 4. 51 corrections were published in LIS journals on average. Studied journals were found to have the correction rate of %0. 69. The mean time from publication of the article to the corresponding erratum was 8. 7 months. The results also showed that the highest share of errors in LIS journals were occurred in authors’ Information (%27. 03), followed by references (%14. 16), tables (%12. 45), figures (%6. 87) and introduction (%6. 44), respectively. Moreover, the results of running a series of Spearman’ s Rank Correlation tests revealed no statistically significant relationship between the journals’ impact factors and their correction rates. Conclusion: Correcting the unintentional mistakes in scholarly articles is an ethical responsibility of researchers. Academic journals should be careful to the process of peer-review and establish clear correction policies.

Abstract: 

Purpose: This article argues that local concepts in Library and Information Science are in line with human nature and needs rather than being a product of western or eastern viewpoints. Design/Methodology/Approach: Relevant literature has been reviewed and analyses have been carried out. Findings: Many concepts are rooted in the culture of Islam, the Quran, and the Hadith. Researchers can use these concepts in their research, especially in theoretical foundations. Conclusion: No analysis similar to this has been carried out before. There will hopefully be stronger foundations in this field for localizing research. This research introduces some basic concepts in the field of Library and Information Science that are rooted in Islamic thoughts in Iran; hopefully similar research will be carried out for other fields in humanities.

Abstract: 

The article presents an account of the Library and Information Science (LIS) education in Iran. It briefly reviews the growth and development of the LIS education in the periods: 1939-1978, as the Pre- Islamic Revolution period, and 1979- 2007, as the Post –Islamic Revolution period. The paper covers an up-to-date list of the 29 universities in Iran offering various LIS programs including Post-Diploma / Associate Diploma; Bachelor of Library and Information Science; Master of Library and Information Science and Ph.D., and the establishment of the LIS departments in a chronological order (84 depts.). It also emphasizes the re-designing of the curriculum based on the emerging needs to match the new technological age. It highlights the current trends in the last 10 years. The paper concludes that Post Islamic-Revolution LIS education witnessed more progress comparing to the Pre-Islamic Revolution period, particularly in the last decade (1997- 2007). At the end, some suggestions are given for improving the LIS education in Iran.

Abstract: 

The purpose of this research is to provide an overview of the process concerning the publishing of the Library and Information Science Journal of Astan Qods Razavi from spring of 1998 to Spring of 2008. twelve parameters have been considered for study including: the participation rate of scientific institutions, ranks and degrees of the authors, the participation rate of scholars and professionals, methods and techniques used in the articles, resources and references of the articles, the cover and binding quality of different issues of the journal, how to access the journal issues, the percentage of non-Iranian articles published in the journal.A total of 339 articles from 39 issues of the journal were studied considering the 12 parameters. Results indicate a favorable qualitative and quantitative status for this journal.
